A true off-the-beaten-path destination can be found just north of Quito on the way to Otavalo. You can relax at the small pier by the lake or set out on one of the trails that surround the lake.
Rent a bike and explore the rolling hills surrounding a trail that used to be a railway track. You can also venture down into the historic caves, one of which was used for lead mining and has an underground river.
When traveling from Cuenca to Guayaquil, the route involves crossing the scenic national park of El Cajas. With hundreds of lakes and wildlife, it offers plenty of activities and hikes of all difficulty levels.
